Sri Lanka

In 2015, following the grant from the British Council, Mr Brandon and Miss Darnley travelled to Sri Lanka as part of the cultural exchange between Chancel Primary and St.Thomas’ College.

They spent a number of days at St Thomas’ College, meeting children and staff and sharing their experiences of teaching in England. They hosted a meeting with the college prefects and taught a range of lessons including: dance, geography and English to children aged 4- 15.

Whilst there, they were also given the opportunity to learn about Sri Lanka, its people, its geography and life after the devastating tsunami that hit in 2001. Visiting an elephant sanctuary, tea plantation and many religious buildings meant that they were able to inspire the children to complete an international project, with the Sri Lankan children completing similar learning.

A few months later, the pupils at Chancel warmly welcomed Mrs Samoon, a teacher from St Thomas’ College, to the school. All children contributed to a fantastic welcoming ceremony and following this, Mrs Samoon visited every class and spent time answering the children’s questions. Chancel children were also treated to traditional Sri Lankan dance lessons.

Our links continue to remain strong and we regularly communicate with our friends in the Indian Ocean.
